audiencia_cenlCENL – The Conference of European National Librarians is a foundation aimed at increasing and reinforcing the role of national libraries, particularly in respect of their responsibilities for maintaining the national cultural heritage. During many years of its existence CENL implemented a number of significant projects such as: TEL – European Library, MSAC – Multilingual Subject Access to Catalogues of National Libraries, Europeana etc. The CENL Conference is held annually, each time at the national library of a different country.
The director of the CNL “Djurdje Crnojevic“, Mrs Jelena Djurovic attended the conference held this year in Madrid from September 23 – 25, 2009 where 48 national librarians from 46 European countries discussed the strategic plans, common problems and the issues related to the European digital library - Europeana. In addition, the Board of Directors at its session adopted the annual CENL report for the period July 2008 - June 2009; the Strategic CENL Plan 2009-2011; CENL Strategy for the European Library Europeana. During the second day of the session, which in addition to the CENL members was also attended by the guest library from Belarus, the digitalisation and copyright issues were discussed.
The official opening was held on 24th September 2009 chaired by Mercedes Del Palacio, Deputy Minister of Culture of Spain and Francisco Luzon, Vice President of the Royal Board of the National Library of Spain.
All participants to the meeting on 24th September were received by the Spanish King Juan Carlos, and on 25th September bz the Mayor of Madrid Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón. The official dinner was held in the famous Prado Museum and was accompanied by a concert performed on the instruments designed by Leonardo da Vinci.
The next meeting will be held in England in 2010.
