The activities of Cetinje’s Year of Culture, approved by the Government for the period 2010-2013, have major significance for the historic, state and cultural identity of Montenegro. The Programme envisages town revitalisation projects aiming to tap into the rich cultural heritage of Cetinje and provide for its most advantageous presentation. The full Programme implementation is both a challenge and responsibility of all authorities and institutions of culture involved.
Revitalisation of cultural monuments and launching of various culture-related projects aspiring to reawaken the cultural and socio-economic life of the Old Royal Capital and encourage its international promotion are vital for the future of Cetinje and its inhabitants. To my mind, this Programme is an excellent opportunity for the revival of the town which is not only the legacy of its citizens, but part of Montenegro’s collective heritage. It is also an opportunity for all people of the Old Royal Capital who love their town, who know its past and its present, to give their contribution and take an active part in its metamorphosis. The Central National Library “Djurdje Crnojevic” expects this year to see the completion of the reconstruction works on the former Italian Embassy building. The works should encompass overall restoration of the ground floor, the upper floor and the basement of the main building: construction and joinery works, electrical high and low voltage installations, thermal insulation, water and sewerage installations, fire protection installations, garden and park landscaping, extension of the outside lighting system to cover the whole library complex. The restoration works to be performed on the main book and periodicals depot include: channelling of sinking streams outside the building to the storm water drain; installation of new electrical high and low voltage systems; instalment of state-of-the-art fire protection devices and close-circuit TV; repair and restoration of the elevator replacing the necessary equipment; restoration of the air-conditioning system; depot interior finishing and design, and replacement of all windows. |
